Hope you have installed the liferay-tomcat-6.0.5

You must have
liferay-IDE(I used Eclipse Indigo)

Liferay-plugin-sdk-6.0.5
http://sourceforge.net/projects/lportal/files/Liferay%20Portal/6.0.5/liferay-plugins-sdk-6.0.5.zip/download
Now, considering you have all of these.
1. open your IDE
2. Go to Window-> Preferences->Liferay
3. click on the "Configure installed liferay Plugin SDKs".
4. click on Add button and browse for where you have extracted your liferay-plugin-sdk in the system.
5. Again go to Liferay. click on "create a new liferay Runtime Environment" and select liferay 6.0 CE(Tomcat 6).
6. After clicking on Next Browse for the directory wherein you extracted your liferay-portal-6.0.5\tomcat-6.0.26
Congratulations, you have successfully configured your IDE.
